Support with the arrival procedures

Visiting professors are EU or NON-EU Professors who have a teaching contract as teachers or as tutors at LUMSA University.

In order to receive support with the arrival procedures in Italy, Visiting Professors can take contact to the Welcome Office in order to receive assistance with the preparation of all the required documents. For assistance professors are invited to send an e-mail to international.admissions@lumsa.it

European Visiting Professors
Before the arrival in Italy, the Visiting Professor should already hold the following documentation:

  • A valid ID document;
  • A valid health insurance or health coverage to stay in Italy.

At the arrival in Italy, in case of a stay longer than 3 months, the Professor must register to the nearest Registry office (Anagrafe) in Rome or in the city where he/she lives.

Main steps to be followed after being selected:

  • The Professor has to send as soon as possible scanned copies of the passport and of the Italian fiscal code (it can be requested through the Italian Embassies/Consulates) and the declaration of tax domicile;
  • Signature of the teaching contract.

At the arrival at LUMSA, the Professor must go the Welcome Office in order to receive all the necessary instructions regarding logistic issues and LUMSA’s services.

Non-European Visiting Professors
Before the arrival in Italy, the Professor has generally to ask for a Visa to the Italian Embassy or Consulate of the country of residence. It is important to contact well in advance the Italian Embassy/Consulate in order to know the relevant documentation required to obtain a Visa. Nevertheless, it must be noted that a Visa can be requested only after having received a copy of the authorization (“nulla osta”) to issue a Visa by the Police (Questura).
It is therefore important to take immediately contact to the Welcome Office in order to receive appropriate assistance and detailed information on the different steps to be followed.

Main steps to be followed after being selected:

  • The Professor has to send as soon as possible scanned copies of passport and Italian fiscal code (it can be requested through the Italian Embassies/Consulates) and the declaration of tax domicile;
  • Signature of the contract;
  • Delegation of the Professor to Welcome Office, translated and legalized by the Italian Embassy/Consulate, which will act on behalf of the Professor in requesting various authorizations needed in Italy;
  • Obtain a Certification by the Italian Territorial Labor Department (done by the Welcome Office if delegated – see bullet point 3 of this list);
  • Obtain the Authorization (“nulla osta”) by the Police (Questura) (done by the Welcome Office if delegated – see bullet point 3 of this list);
  • Obtain an appointment at the Italian Embassy/Consulate to request the Visa.

After arriving in Italy, in case of a stay less than 90 days, the professor will not need to apply for a Residence Permit, but, within 8 days from the entrance on the Italian territory, he/she will need to go to the Police (Questura) for the declaration of presence (if not exempted).
In case of a stay longer than 90 days, within 8 days from the entrance on the Italian territory, the professor must apply for a Residence Permit. The request must be presented to a Post Office through the “Sportello amico” services. It is suggested to keep always the receipt received at the Post Office for any request of check by the Police.
