What is Wireless Networking
Wireless networking is a technology that allows communications over a computer network without a physical, wired connection, through the use of radio waves.  This technology is based on standards set by an international organization, known as the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE). The generic specification, known as IEEE 802.11, contains specific descriptions for various connection techniques at different data speeds, of which  IEEE 802.11b (11 Mbps) and IEEE 802.11g (54 Mbps) are the most common in use today.
LUMSA offers IEEE 802.11b/g wireless services to all students and staff under the name LUMSA Wi-Fi.

How it works
The service is provided through a series of strategically placed radio transmitter/receivers (or “transceivers,” as they are known in the industry),  mounted in positions designed to provide maximum coverage. Each of these devices is known as an Access Point (AP).
Users communicate with APs through a wireless network interface attached or built-in to various electronic devices, such as computer laptop, wireless-enabled personal information managers (PIMs), and wireless network enabled mobile phones. Most laptops are now sold with built in wireless circuitry, or adapted using a wireless PC card that plugs into the PCMCIA port of the laptop.
