Visiting teachers from Italy in Massachusetts' Private Schools
The Visiting Teachers Program is intended for teachers from Italy who will teach Italian, foreign languages and other general subjects in M.A.. The goal of this program is to promote cultural exchanges between USA and Italy.
The teachers included in this program are granted J-1 visas from the Department of Immigration.
Sponsoring Organizations: The Visiting Teachers Program is a collaborative Program sponsored by the Archdioceses of Boston, Fall River and Worcester; Assumption University (LUMSA) in Rome, Italy and Stonehill College in Easton, MA.
Selection method and arrangements for financial support of the exchange visitor while in the USA.
Selection Method:
All candidates possess the necessary credentials to qualify them to teach as a visiting teacher in Massachusetts.
The candidates who apply for this position are recommended and selected by education authorities from LUMSA University in Italy.
After the preliminary selection is made, the candidates are interviewed in Italy by the alternate responsible officer of the program.
Each candidate is selected on the basis of their merit, honesty, commitment, and especially for their understanding of and enthusiasm for their task as educators. Stonehill College will support the participants by allowing them to participate in Massachusetts Teacher Communication and Literacy Examen workshops offered at he college. The college will provide an open dialogue with the visiting teachers and school districts.
Interviews are conducted only in English to assess English language proficiency. Candidates who do not have an acceptable degree of proficiency in English are not considered for th Visiting Teachers Program. The interview includes questions about teaching methodology, theory on a second language acquisition, teaching experience, classroom management, students as learners, content.
Instruction and an overwiew of the program are given to the candidates about what it means to be a teacher in America. The preparation of candidates includes instruction: in behavior and classroom management; curriculum and lesson design; teaching methodology; assessment techniques; an overview of American schools and most important, the psychology of the American teenager.
Resumes and letters of recommendations of the candidates will be made available to interested principals and department chairs. Interviews of candidates may be conducted in person and/or by videoconference between Italy and the U.S.A. Videos of actual classroom settings in America will be sent to LUMSA to build a video reference library for potential candidates.
Financial Arrangements: The visiting teachers are hired under local contract in elementary, middle and/or secondary classrooms in school districts in Massachusetts. They are employed by school systems and are involved in the education system of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the Achdioceses of Boston, Fall River and Worcester.
Salary, health insurance and other benefits (sick leave, vacation, etc.) are provided through the local school system that employs them. The visiting teachers will be living in program housing and will be responsible fot their living expenses including rent, utlities, food, transportation, etc.
Tha Scholar Teachers are prepared through seminars, videoconferences and a special course given by Prof. Rita Smith from Stonehill College.
Prof. Rita Smith has been honored by the Time Magazine as the best teacher in all the United States of America in 1984. After a teaching career of 25 years is the Director of Stonehill Education Project thus preparing hundreds of teachers for their important mission of communicating the truth motivated by love.
At the end of last year's teachers training course, His Eminence Carlo Furno met the group and showed great satisfaction for their outstanding preparation.
Sr. Marinella Andreotti belong to the Congregatioin of Union of St. Catherine of Siena.
Her religious Congregation is totally dedicated to the education of youth by teaching at all levels, by running catholic schools for th poor all around the world and a catholic university, that is , Assumption University - LUMSA - where more than five thousand students attend variuos courses.
LUMSA promotes higher professional studies concernig education, languages, law and classical revival.
